Last updated by ess-home on 9/16/2008

Environment Protection Act 1997 - Australia

The National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) is a public Internet database that displays information about the emissions and transfers of 93 substances to air, land and water from industrial facilities and diffuse sources.

The objectives of the NPI are to:

  • Help industry and government with environmental planning and management
  • Give the community up to date information about pollutant emissions from industrial facilities
  • Promote waste minimization, cleaner production, and energy and resource efficiency

Management System and Data Management Implications

NPI reporting can have significant implications for industrial facilities. An extensive list of substances must be monitored.

To effectively report on these substances, a data management system can be useful to:

  • Record chemical uses and releases.
  • Setup an NPI configuration to use the sources of data in the implementation.
  • Evaluate reporting thresholds to determine chemicals required to report.
  • Run the report to create an NPI Submission.
  • Generate the NPI submission.
