NERC - North American Electric Reliability Corporation

NERC is an international, independent, self-regulatory, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. NERC develops and enforces reliability standards; assesses adequacy annually via a 10-year forecast in addition to winter and summer forecasts; monitors the bulk power system; audits owners, operators and users for preparedness; and educates, trains and certifies industry personnel.

NERC's standards are mandatory and enforceable throughout the United States and several provinces in Canada. Organizations in the U.S. found to be in violation of a standard can be subject to fines of up to $1 million per day per violation.
