Award Winners Spotlight Best Practices in EH&S Information Management
ESS Excellence Awards Show Measurable Benefits of Using IT to Reduce Operational Risks and Costs
TEMPE, Ariz. - October 6, 2006 - Tuesday, October 10, the first annual ESS Excellence Awards will be presented to 18 businesses, agencies and institutions for their outstanding use of information technology to reduce risks and costs associated with environmental, health and safety (EH&S) and crisis management.
The inaugural ESS Excellence Awards will celebrate extraordinary achievements of organizations that reduced operational risks that resulted in reduced costs and enhanced operating efficiencies. For example:
- A manufacturer cut emission compliance costs more than $100,000 during a 12-month period by implementing an emissions monitoring, recordkeeping and reporting (MRR) tracking system;
- A public utility projects $1.3 million in cost reductions and efficiencies over seven years following deployment of a regulatory compliance system;
- A chemical refining company saved a projected $200,000 in annual outsourcing costs for its leak detection and reporting (LDAR) system, eventually transforming the program into a profit center; and
- A major university saved $70,000 by using its refrigerant tracking capability to locate a broken plastic interlock instead of replacing a refrigerant motor.

One ESS Excellence Award winner will be recognized as being the"Best of the Best," the organization whose automated solution stood out as the most innovative, and generated the greatest benefit to its stakeholders.
Winners of ESS Excellence Awards were determined based on achieving measurable benchmarks for innovative use of technology; impact on employee health and safety; emission reduction; resultant benefit to the surrounding community; cost reduction or fiscal impact; risk reduction; and internal awareness of the project.
The recipients will be honored at an awards gala to be held during ESS EXPO.06, the Business Conference and Workshop for Essential Suite® and Compliance Suite® users, scheduled for October 8-12 at Pointe South Mountain Resort in Phoenix.
