Halliburton is one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the oil and gas industry, with more than 100,000 employees located at facilities in more than 120 countries. According to Halliburton's 2004 Corporate Sustainability Report, "The company maintains Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as a core value and provides support on HSE matters as they relate to our business activities. Helping to define, establish and incorporate HSE responsibility and accountability through every level creates value for our customers. Our vision is to create an incident-free environment and to conduct business with no adverse environmental impact."

The Challenge

  • Drive continuous improvement of HSE performance
  • Streamline Tier II chemical storage reporting, which required significant staff resources

The Solution

  • Essential Air™
  • Essential Waste™
  • Essential Water™
  • Essential Chemical Inventory™
  • Essential Compliance Manager™
  • Essential Task Manager™
  • Essential Incident Master™

The Results

  • Generated savings exceeding $100,000 annually
  • Reduced staff assigned to conduct Tier II reporting from more than 100 to just a few.

In conjunction with its operations, Halliburton maintains an inventory of chemical materials at more than 150 of its U.S. facilities. Storage of certain hazardous chemicals is regulated under the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).

Halliburton's Tier II annual compliance reporting tasks required a considerable investment of staff resources for gathering inventory data. Staff members were assigned to compile lists of all regulated chemicals that were being stored at each location. The data was sent to the company's corporate headquarters in Houston, where it was compiled into reports for government regulators.

Halliburton's HSE team realized that there was an opportunity to streamline this process to make it less costly and more efficient. Using Essential Chemical Inventory™, Essential Suite's Tier II reporting module, the process of collection and reporting the data could now be improved.

Essential Chemical Inventory enables fast tracking of both pure chemicals and mixtures with ease, while helping companies maintain environmental compliance. The system provides the flexibility to track and calculate inventory by transaction, estimate, or both, allowing for customized material inventories and regulatory reports.

Inventory from SAP systems and data from legacy systems were loaded into Essential Chemical Inventory. The software enabled Halliburton managers to quickly obtain the amounts and locations of chemicals on hand. As a result they were able to reduce the number of staff gathering remote compliance data from more than 150 to just a few, freeing those valuable resources for more productive activities.

Halliburton officials estimated that Essential Suite helped cut the company's Tier II reporting costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Essential Chemical Inventory also is being used for reporting of chemical inventories at Halliburton's facilities in Canada, and chemical hazard reporting in Mexico.
